Every time I ride my horse... I always put on bell boots & either splint or SMB II boots... Is that ok....?!?

My horse has a tendency to overreach and step on his shoes so I put on the bell boots. And I put the splints boots or SMB II boots on for protection. I only put them on his front legs.

Thanks for answering! :]

I think you are asking this because there is an old myth about a horse becoming dependent upon splint boots. Years ago people used to think that and it probably still exists in some areas. Look at every stock performance horse out there and you will see that they wear boots to protect their tendons and ligaments. I even use them to trail ride.

If blocking (filing down the front curve to a slight square) your horse%26#039;s rear feet do not solve the overreaching (we had a short backed horse that did this no matter what), wear those bells and don%26#039;t worry.
Reply:If you%26#039;re not using velcro bell boots, just leave them on all of the time, it%26#039;ll save you much time spent tugging and pulling those annoying things on and off.

I agree with the other answerers, the problem is usually helped by corrective shoeing/trimming. As for the leg boots, I would always ride with them on anyways, and get some for the back legs, too, for support as well as protection. You could also try polo wraps, but they take longer to put on, and if you don%26#039;t put them on properly you can hurt your horse%26#039;s tendons.
Reply:Well if he over reaches then it%26#039;s not a bad idea.

My horse used to do this to, but the farrier was able to trim/shoe him so that he didn%26#039;t do it as badly...maybe your farrier can try to do something for your horse as well...but in the meantime, bell boots and smb boots are probably a good idea.
Reply:I don%26#039;t think it%26#039;s a problem, however, you may want to ask your farrier if he can correct the overreaching with corrective shoeing. If so, you probably wouldn%26#039;t need as much leg protection
Reply:I think its def. ok, I also ride with velcro bell boots(just in the front, which I keep on all the time) and splint boots, just for that extra protection!
