Horse riding or football?

i want to learn to ride but i would have to hang my football boots up to do so. and i am a bit self consious about doing as most of my friends think it is a girls sport. which shouuld i chose? i want to learn the cross country decipline of riding.

Horse riding or football?
go horse riding instead. Its not a girls sport, there are plenty of guys that ride.
Reply:I had a similar problem when I was younger. My mom said I had to give up gymnastics and martial arts to ride and having never ridden before, I was reluctant to give up one activity just to find out I did not like riding.

I would suggest finding a camp that offers riding lessons, or a week at the beginning of the summer where you can hang out with the horses, ride and see how you like it, without sacrificing football.

Also, if your friends think riding is for girls, remember Bruce Davidson, Phil Dutton, David O%26#039;Conner, Andreas Helgstrand, Robert Dover, David Chiaccha and countless other Olympic level riders.
Reply:Horseback riding, if any of your friends make fun of you, put them on a horse. After ten minutes of walking and trotting they%26#039;ll be sore for a week(or more). It takes more courage to ride a horse than play football. A horse weighs around 1000-12000lbs and it can kill or seriously injure you, even if it%26#039;s just a lesson pony(it%26#039;s unlikely though, for lesson or well-trained horses to do that). A horse has a mind of it%26#039;s own and you have to have a good attitude and never say can%26#039;t, otherwise the instructor yells at you and makes you do whatever you say you can%26#039;t do. It%26#039;s much harder than football and you have to be very committed to the sport if you want to do cross-country.
Reply:Why can you not do both? There is no reason what so ever for why you should give up one sport to take up another. You do need to juggle your social life, but it can be done. Your fitness levels from the football will help with horse riding. I run marathons and ride horses. My boyfriend is a huge football fan, but has just taken up horse riding at the age of 52. Yes there are generally more girls that ride, but plenty of men take to horse riding to. You will need to find a reputable riding school were you can take lessons. Check the British Horse Society website for a list of schools in your area. Visit the ones that you like the look of and book a lesson. The instructors are used to teaching beginners and will find you a nice quite horse to begin on. Don%26#039;t worry about what your friends say. Just have fun and enjoy.
Reply:Well, the idea that horses constitute a %26quot;girls%26quot; sport is because girls and women usually relate well to sensitive horses. But, some of the greatest trainers and competitors in both western and English riding are MEN. Don%26#039;t let your friends stop you from riding if you really want to do so. As for football, why can%26#039;t you do both? My advice? Do whatever you want to do and disregard any discouragement, friends or not.
Reply:it%26#039;s not a girl sport there are lots of guys who ride and compete and win and if your a smart guy you%26#039;ll do horses hey think about how many girls your gonna meet and hang with! personally i loooove football but i think you should be a man and try horses but you will probably want to start with jumping before you dive into cross country after all if you can%26#039;t jump you can%26#039;t do cross country! just follow your gut and ignore the jocks! but most of all choose what YOU like best!
Reply:Either English or Western, any guy who rides a horse seems to be an automatic %26quot;chick magnet%26quot;. I remember when I was a teenage girl and there were too few guys out there in the horse world. The guys who I knew basically liked fast cars, not horses!

Cross country is NOTHING for the faint of heart so BRAVO! Tell the guys on the football team that you double dog dare %26#039;em to follow suit and try for cross country, the football will seem for the faint of heart.
Reply:Horse riding ids a good sport to keep you fit and healthy and it isn%26#039;t a girls sport it is actually the most dangerouse sport in the world so just tell your friends that[don%26#039;t let this put you of though] i have been riding for over 4 years now and when i used to go to a riding school lots of boys went infact more boys than girls...now when i take my horses to shows i find it is pretty evenly spread between boys and girls and most of the top riders are men! give it a go it%26#039;s worth wile and really fun =] horses can be understanding and will help you learn as long as you get the right one...you%26#039;ll fall off a bit but everyone does i have loads and broken bones and had opperations [ but it%26#039;s rare] i just don%26#039;t have a very good balance even though i am a good rider =]...Good Luck and give it a go =]
Reply:horse-riding! at least give it a go, if you find you arent suited to it then go back to football.

Your friends clearly dont know too much about horse-riding if they think its girly. Horse riders have to be tough as nails and its a far more dangerous sport than football! If they hopped up on a horse and you sent them over a few fences they%26#039;d figure out it requires real toughness! After a few hard falls they wouldnt think it was just for girls anymore!!
Reply:Give football a break this season and try riding! if you don%26#039;t you%26#039;ll never know will you.

As for what your mates say....well just tell them there is nothing wrong with trying new things, if everyone was the same, life would be dull.

It is true that girls are interested in horses more than boys but just think of all the fit girls you will be mixing with!

Would you rather spend your days off in the company of a bunch of sweaty lads, or out in the sunshine with pretty girls?

On a serious note though horse riding has it%26#039;s dangers and not just the horses kicking and biting! You will fall off at some stage and hitting the ground hurts a whole lot when you fall from a horse!

Go and try at a good riding centre. If you like it go from there.
Reply:Well...even if the sport is mostly dominated by girls - the girls love the few guys that are brave enough to come and endure our sport. Guys in the horse field are a hot commodity...you%26#039;ll be the one with all the girls hanging on your arm - so you need to make the choice on what you%26#039;d prefer - but don%26#039;t do it because of being self conscious as you%26#039;ll surely have more girls after you than the football boys!
Reply:Just give it a try, I know lots of lads that ride. If you don%26#039;t enjoy then you can always go back to football. But of course you will. If your mates give you any stick then just show them people jumping the huge fences at Badminton or Kentucky but if that doesn%26#039;t work tell them it%26#039;s a great way to meet girls!
Reply:Well first take a look at the world.

You may see many girl training but in the Show world it has many many men. At times i wonder wher ethey all come from becuase i rarely see them training at a barn.

So no it ISNT just a girl sport. If you really want to invest time and really want to learn and like horses and want to learn more into them. Go for it I say.

If someone questions you tell them it is jut as much a girl and boy sport, just look at the olympics.
Reply:Well, ask your parents if you can do both for at least a month because you have to realize, it will take years before your doing any of the cool jumps you%26#039;re PROBABLY thinking of (Like huge log jump into the water). It will probably take at least a year of weekly riding lessons to even do walk, trot, canter and small jumps. Sorry to be harsh but it is true. Many people quit after they realize how much work it is , so I think you should wait and see if you actually like it first. Hope I helped!
Reply:Well, if you want to learn, then you should!

Plenty of men ride.

:D

You%26#039;ll have to LEARN to ride before you can learn to jump.

So, be prepared to wait a while.

Horseback riding is dangerous, but we know the risk we%26#039;re taking getting up in that saddle.

Oh, and you%26#039;ll be sore, for a while.

:3
Reply:A girl%26#039;s sport - lol.

Riding is officially recognised as a high risk sport. Cross country riding is an Extreme sport.

Football is pretty tame compared to it ( just watch Badminton !)

And I have to agree with what others have already said about men who ride horses being extremely popular with the ladies.
Reply:take your friends to a rodeo and then they%26#039;ll see how hard it can be. The sport needs more guys in it, and it is much more dangerous than contact sports. it takes a lot of work to be good, but it is much more fun. cross country is one of my favorite things to do, i vote you learn to ride. and see how many of them thinks its a girls sport when they%26#039;re too scared to get on a horse.
Reply:well, why not give it a try for a month and see how it goes? do it when you are in the off season of football that way you don%26#039;t have to quit your team. look into stables before actually scheduling a lesson. find one that you like and go visit it. meet your trainer and then if you like it you can schedule a lesson. cross country is a hard discipline to start with! maybe try show jumping? take a look:

cross country is always an option, it is just a very hard discipline to start out with.
Reply:well i guess its really up to you but you have to think about all the proffessional males who are into competing at a high level of horse riding and that there are many boys who ride as well, just because your friends think it is a girls sport doesnt mean that it actually is cause football isnt only for boys now is it?
Reply:why dont you try riding on the off season. visit a barn near you and take a few lessons. if you like it then take a few more, if you dont like it stick to football.

it isnt just a girl sport, i know LOTS of guys who ride! and they enjoy ever second of it.
Reply:Well only you can decide that. But I wouldn%26#039;t let what people think affect your decision. As for being a %26#039;girl%26#039; sport, I don%26#039;t think so...I would say horse riding is more liberating and personal and quite a wonderful and unique experience....
Reply:Do what makes you happy. You can always try riding and if you end up not liking it, go back to football. I think its cool for a man to ride. My husband rides, my daughter%26#039;s boyfriend is taking up lessons for his senior project. Go for it and have a load of fun.
Reply:Horse riding. Thats an easy quistion. I h8 football why so many people watch and play it i dont know i support noone its a rubbish game. But then agian im a girl. If i was a boy i would probably go for football cuz then you wont get picked on by ya m8s.
Reply:NO !!! Dont pick football DUDE FREAKEN ITS CHEESY !!!! dont let the cheese spary you go riding its a chance of a life time .... WOULD U RATHER ALMOST BRAKE YOUR

ARM

LEG

FOOT

|TOE

JAW IN FOOT BALL???

OR LEARN TO BE A HORSE WHISPERER ???

HORSE WHISPERERS ARE AWSOME !

Trust me ok ! dO THE HORSES THEY WONT EVER GIVE UP ON YOU !!!
Reply:I have a hard time picturing a cowboy of being girly in any way. I mean is it scarier to have a 100-200 Ib person coming at you ready to tackle you or sitting on 1200 Ib of muscle and knowing that it could dump you at any given second.
Reply:thats a tough decision. i would start taking riding lessons and keep doing football, then decide if you like riding enough. riding is a hard sport, it will take time to be able to get to do cross country courses, kept that in mind.
Reply:its not a girl sport a lot of guys ride, u should do something different from the others, be urself, dont do wat the other guys do to be cool. i would go with horseback riding
Reply:hey if you wanna play safe, stick with football, if you want some adrenalin ...try riding... ;-)

ask my fella who is an ex para adrenalin junkie... ;-) it took me 10years of persusion to get him on a horse.. lol!!!! now he is eyeing up race horses... lol!!!
Reply:Who cares what your friends think. If they were true friends they wouldn%26#039;t judge you on what activities you do. they would like you for who you really are
Reply:Don%26#039;t Worry, who cares, Girls play great football to! So what does it matter! Don%26#039;t worry, Be happy!
Reply:Get a clue, fella--participating in sports which are popular with chicks IS A REALLY GOOD WAY TO MEET CHICKS.
