What kind of boots should I ride my horse in?

I%26#039;m a hunter/jumper rider and I Just got a new hunter horse, but I don%26#039;t know what kind of boots I should ride him in

What kind of boots should I ride my horse in?
I would say something with a heel so your foot doesnt go through the stirrups and it will give oyu a good grip when the horse jumps. Also look for something that is knee high to keep your leg from rubbing the saddle when your jumping.
Reply:If it%26#039;s for you, something with a heel of 1 1/2 inches or higher that protects your calf and ankles. You%26#039;ll want the heel to be thick enough to prevent your feet from slipping through the stirrups. You also might want to invest in safety stirrups until you get a little expierence under your belt.

If it%26#039;s for your horse, the best ones I%26#039;ve found that will last forever are SMB%26#039;s or Sports Medicine Boots. They come in a variety of sizes and colors so you%26#039;re bound to find a pair you love. Also they are safer then using polo wraps because if done polo wraps will do more harm then good.

Hope this answers your question!!
Reply:Are you looking for boots for yourself or your horse? I%26#039;m not quite clear. For yourself, I recommend a basic paddock boot with half chaps for everyday riding. You%26#039;ll want field boots for showing, lessons, and clinics.

As for your horse. You said he%26#039;s primarily a hunter, and I%26#039;m guessing you%26#039;ll be doing some fence work with him. I don%26#039;t advise splint boots, as these offer very little protection over fences. Dover Saddlery makes a great sport boot (http://www.doversaddlery.com/dover-pro-s... for schooling. I like to use these in front and polo wrap the hind. When showing hunters, you%26#039;re usually not permitted to have wraps or boots of any kind on your horse%26#039;s legs. Equitation and jumpers is a bit different. For either of these, I recommend a good quality open-front boot, leather with either fleece or rubber lining. These provide protection of the suspensories, but the open-front design still allows the horse to feel the rail if he gets careless and drops his front leg.

Reply:There are two types of boots you can get. One goes a little above the ankle (however you need to wear jodper straps) and the other is a full boot to the knee. What age group are you in and what levels are you planning on competing in (You going to be in the equestrian federation shows or just fun shows). If your in EF shows I%26#039;d say go with the knee high boots. A little more pricy, but will 1. protect your leg well and 2. look more professional.
Reply:Well, obviously you would want to wear close toed shoes.

--But for shows you are going to want tall boots-- I suggest Ariat Heritage Field boots, they look really nice, are a great reputable brand and they are on the lower half of the expenses scale from 200-200$

Here%26#039;s the link to their online store but you can buy them at your local tack shop or even petsmart--

If you enter a hunter jumping show and you are over 14 you have to wear tall boots, it%26#039;s required-- if you are under 14 you have to wear garters, which is a strap that buckles at the knee, and then wear paddock/short boots with them. OR if you are under 5ft you have to wear them. They can be bought here, or at a tack shop-- but heres what they look like

As for riding around the arena, practicing and what not i suggest Ariat Woman%26#039;s Heritage II zip paddock! They zip up and are really comfy-- i%26#039;ve had mine for five years and they are still in good condition-- and i%26#039;m not exactly gentle on them! Heres the link to their online store but you can buy them at a local tack shop and even petsmart.

Reply:splint boots. there just small boots that cover the fetlock and lower front leg. there isn%26#039;t must support but thats ok because youdon%26#039;t want your hunter to get used to the suport since youwont be able to use the boots in the hunter ring. just ask for splint boots at your tck shop. they%26#039;ll know what you mean.
