What is the best (safest) protective motorcycle gear for everyday riding on a road cruiser?

im getting my learners permit soon, but before i do i want to do my research into protective gear because obviously motorcycle riding can be dangerous. ive decided i want to buy a yamaha xv250 virago for my first bike,

so i was wondering what the best protective gear to buy would be?

ive looked at many web sites but theres such a big range of gear that i dont know whats better. im mainly after the safest and most comfortable armoured gear (plus something that looks ok as well), money isnt really a big issue as long as the money is well invested. i want to buy every piece of protective gear from my helmet to boots to gloves to pants etc etc. and im after gear that is fairly visible (for obvious reasons).

obviously i%26#039;ll prob have to go to the motorcycle shop and try on the gear

but i just wanted to get an idea of what types/brands etc of gear i should look at. also any other tips would be great!

thanks in advance

While you%26#039;re at your Yamaha dealer%26#039;s shop, check out his selection of helmets, jackets, gloves, etc. You will probably be able to pick up everything you need at one stop, except for a sturdy pair of leather boots.

For a good set of every-day riding gear, I would recommend textile (nylon or Cordura) jacket and pants instead of leathers. Leather tends to be heavy, and will soak up water in the rain, which causes you to fell cold and soggy. Leather also does not breathe as well in warm weather, so it%26#039;s easy to get overheated. Textiles are water resistant, and also have armored padding for important parts of your anatomy. Textiles are also available in bright colors which are more visible to other drivers.

Whatever you buy, make sure it fits well and is comfortable to wear, and wear it all the time. It won%26#039;t protect you in a spill if you left it at home because it%26#039;s uncomfortable, or you were just going to the corner store...

Reply:thanks you all for your advice, i greatly appreciate it!

any other comments or suggestions please feel free, im happy to take any advice on board.

Reply:The safest equipment is that which you are willing to wear. It needs to be comfortable and practical.

I wear a textile jacket (Firstgear Mesh Tex 3) because it gets really hot where I live, but the jacket remains comfortable. The mesh design allows airflow, and the textile and armor provides safety. In my circle of friends who wear all black, my vivid yellow jacket stands out. I%26#039;m often the guy asked to ride at the tail of the group, because I%26#039;m the one who the leader can see, even 3/4 mile away in a rear-view mirror. That makes me feel good.

I wear full-finger-length gloves now, all the time. A year ago, I thought I didn%26#039;t need them and had an accident. My knuckles now have permanent scars they didn%26#039;t need to have. The over-ankle boots I wore kept me from foot injuries, and I wear them all the time as well.

I wear a full-face helmet, but will soon go to the HJC CL-33 3/4 helmet because I want the increased visibility. In my area with heavy traffic, I think 3/4 protection is enough, with the ability to see better adding to my chances of avoiding accidents. When I am out cruising with buddies, I want and need to be able to be heard clearly, and my current full-face helmet muffles my voice too much.

I don%26#039;t wear riding pants. I wear jeans. I%26#039;d feel silly in riding pants, and jeans provide enough protection for me. I won%26#039;t wear shorts. I%26#039;m not Tom Jones, so I wouldn%26#039;t wear leather pants.

I have chosen equipment that fits my lifestyle because then I will use it. I know that a heavy leather jacket that provides more protection (maybe) than my light textile jacket will sit in my closet on our 95F+ days.

As mentioned above, the best money you can spend is on a MSF riding class. Knowledge is your best protection.

Good luck!
Reply:I wear a blue and black Joe Rocket jacket year round ,KBC full face helmet ,Frank Thomas Aqua Force gloves for cold weather and I keep a pair of warm weather gloves with me never know when the weather will change both pair are full fingered I wouldn%26#039;t get on a bike without full fingered gloves , leather chaps during the winter, blue jeans during the summer and a pair of boots that cover my ankles and are comfortable to walk around in all day

Reply:I wear Furygan leathers and gloves, Daytona Boots, Shoei Helmet, and a Knox back protector !

It depends how and where you ride ! If you ride in very hot weather than get a mesh jacket. If its cold then wear Leathers or a full textile suit.

Spend the most you can afford to spend (you dont have to go crazy)

You sound like you are going to be sensible and i think you will really enjoy the biking experience !

Just don%26#039;t ride in shorts and tee shirt with no gloves and wearing sandals ! (oh yes ! plenty of people do that when its hot)
Reply:Buying safety equipment is a great idea. But your best buy safety wise would be knowledge.Shell out the bucks for a DOT approved helmet and then take a motorcycle safety course. While your there you can ask your instructors about safety equipment. They will be glad to steer you in the right direction.Ride safe, and remember, keep the rubber side down.Good luck Buck.
Reply:Don%26#039;t fool yourself into believing that all this gear is going to make you safe. On a track with 50%26#039; of unobstructed buffer zone a rider can often slide out a crash get up and rejoin the race without a scratch...or be dead if he lands wrong. In the real world of oncoming traffic and people blowing stoplights and every kind of solid obstruction.....don%26#039;t get your hopes up that all your gear is going to be that much help.

I usually wear my full face helmet and whatever I want to be wearing when I get to where I%26#039;m going. Or on a long trip I have a nice leather jacket for when it%26#039;s cold and a nice mesh jacket for when it%26#039;s hot. Then just levies and hiking boots.

The most important thing to keep you safe is to always be hyper aware and keep a paranoid attitude about other vehicles.
Reply:i ride joe rocket jacket, and shoei full face helmet...

but I ride a fast bike....
Reply:You have chosen a good bike and are committed to safety. Lots of good answers above, so you don%26#039;t need my comments on apparel. However I hope you have taken, or plan to take, the MSF class. info at http://www.msf-usa.org

Welcome to riding.
